What is ADHD?

Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) is a complex mental health disorder which is characterized by inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. It is something that people of any age can have, but it usually starts in an early age and can continue through adolescence and adulthood. A child with ADHD may find it difficult to achieve something in school, finish simple tasks at home, and even get along with other people – even kids their own age. Having ADHD could mean losing your patience really quick, getting bored pretty fast, or having difficulty focusing on something. While these things are something that can be really common among children, there are those who exhibit these behaviors in a more serious and recurring manner. So how exactly do you now that your child has ADHD?

We can help you and your child manage issues that often face people with ADHD. These may include social and behavioural issues, and helping with settling in and concentrating at school. People with ADHD often require assistance with executive functioning skills.

Symptoms of ADHD

  • Easy distraction

A child with ADHD gets distracted pretty easily. They often miss details or forget stuff, and they also switch from one activity to another very fast.

  • Loss of interest

Kids usually have very short attention span, but those who have ADHD seem to lose attention more quickly. They get bored with a task in just a few minutes and they have trouble putting their focus on something.

  • Slow or no response

Kids with this disorder do not seem to listen when spoken to. They get easily confused and have difficulty processing information unlike other kids.

  • Too much energy

Hyperactivity is one characteristic of someone with ADHD, and for a child, this includes fidgeting and squirming in their seats, talking nonstop, and being constantly in motion.

  • Exaggerated tantrums

Those with ADHD can be overly impulsive. They can be very impatient, they blurt out comments that are inappropriate, they have trouble restraining their emotions, they interrupt conversations of other people, and they can get easily cranky with the simplest things.

ADHD Care

When you notice these things, it may be very easy for you to conclude that your child has ADHD. But do not be too quick in labeling these traits as ADHD. Sometimes these behaviors can be results of something that is very straightforward.

Lack of sleep, poor nutrition, a problem with hearing or vision, and stress or pressure can cause a child not to pay attention, be disorganized and unfocused, and even act out in other ways.
